In the 1960s and 70s, the beautiful Jane Birkin became famous for carrying her basket around Paris.
People would recognize her and Serge Gainsbourg from behind because of her basket and his ears. I prefer the basket to the purse that Hermès would go on to name after her.
Today when
Sonia posted
this link with a picture of Tommy from
Notes from Naive with her
basket from Madeira &
gorgeous Agnès B. coat, I was so happy. What a lovely sight!

Now, where can I get one of these baskets for myself, other than on a pretty island in the Atlantic?
Addendum: Sweet
Alice has offered to send me one from an artisan in Portugal! Hooray!
beautiful.

Sweet photographs. The ladies look so happy.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure exactly where one might find such a basket. In the town next to mine we have a local basket maker; I think I would look there first. Also, my local fiber shop gives basket making lessons and they might have some finished projects for sale. Perhaps you could check places like that, local to you?
sooo cute!
ReplyDeletei love how happy they both are in those photos haha. clearly this basket is the key to happiness.
i have seen things like this while on vacation in cape cod. i would look up nantucket baskets and see what comes up. i agree they are cute. i almost bought one once myself.
ReplyDeleteoh, if you really want one, I can send it over, from Portugal.
ReplyDeleteAll my bag handles are made from wicker (I think this is the right wotd in english?), and so I know an artisan that makes baskets like this too. :)
Just let me know if you want it!
what a delightful idea!!
ReplyDeleteI think you should go to Madeira! :) My family is from there and it was such a beautiful place to visit. The beautiful flowers and mini-waterfalls were heavenly.
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing! i went to tommy's blog and really love it! she's got an awesome collection of lomo pictures/city guides!

ReplyDeleteJane Birkin is one of my all time style icons! She's the queen of bourgeois bohemian. And though I imagine a Birkin bag is a nice thing to have, I somehow prefer the basket too!
ReplyDeleteHappy to know you are going to get a basket from Portugal too!
ReplyDeleteyes, i prefer the basket, too!
ReplyDeleteThanks, everyone! Yes, it would seem that basket purses make people smile and make them so happy! I love it!
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh, what a wonderful style anecdote! i love how offhandedly carefree and lovely Tommy looks...so refreshing in our age of 'It bags'!
ReplyDeletei had a basket purse once, it fell apart, but it did receive a lot of looks, good& bad...
ReplyDeletei love both these images you posted! lovely girls all around
Kiosk! From their latest Portugal collection...

love that photo of jane birkin... now i want to grab myself a basket and go run around the farmers market buying all sorts stuff. it's always more fun when properly accessorized!
ReplyDeleteWow, I had no idea about Birkin--I have to admit to liking the basket much more than the Hermes bag, as well. & Tommy--too cute!
ReplyDeleteLovely. The "jane birkin" basket is made in Algarve (south of portugal), not in madeira island. You can get one from Feitoria. The y are very different from one another, although on the photos they may look similar. Anyway, they're both beautiful :)
