not forkchops

In December Geoff & I were contacted by a local design company, imm living, about collaborating on a limited edition tote to give away as part of an event for the Toronto Design Offsite Festival. We, of course, jumped at the chance. The event is called Not Forkchops; for Not Forkchops, a few local designers created a prototype of a product, and attendees have the opportunity to vote on which item is put into production.

Since the idea behind the event was cultural integration, and since many of the designers created products that alluded to their ethnic backgrounds, we made a tote that featured lyrics from the song “A Minha Menina” by the Brazilian band Os Mutantes (“the silver moon hid itself and the golden sun appeared”), since Portuguese was actually the first language that I learned to speak. We won't be selling this tote but if you visit The Department between now and Sunday there might be some left.

We attended the media opening on Wednesday night and hung out with some balloon dogs. Thanks, imm!

    1. Thank you! It's nice that Geoff and I have gotten to the point where I can say "I want it to look like this" and he'll whip something up that is exactly the right thing.

  5. That's a lovely tote. Os Mutantes is one of my favorite bands and I love A Minha Menina. Too bad you are not selling these, I would have loved to buy one. (And since I live in Denmark, swinging by Toronto is unfortunately not an option... :)

  6. ooo...love the tote! and the ceramics, and the little star-stool, and...um, all of it? (i was wondering what the 'forkchops' sign was doing in the department's window...not as pretty as their usual blank slate!)

i wonder if there will be any totes left by the time i stop by this weekend...(i'm under the weather big-time, with a horrible cold)

i tried to follow the design week promo stuff in NOW, but it was hard to do so. is it just me, or is all the information about the week mildly convoluted? i'm not really sure what's being put on where, or even why! argh. maybe it's an insider thing...

    1. Yeah, it's a little confusing, I think because this is the first time they've had official "offsite" events. It was pretty amazing, though! I really enjoyed taking a stroll along Dundas last night, even in the snow.

I am a huge fieldguided fan & have a tote of my very own (in which I absolutely adore) but this one honestly has to be my most favourite tote bag on the face of the entire earth. I can not quit drooling over it. That is all(: Anyway, would love to have one!!!! Cheers<3
