giveaway: penguin drop caps

12.21: This giveaway is now closed. The winner is Caroline. Congratulations!

I may not write about it here much, but I spend most days of the week sitting in an office in a university library typesetting books and journals. It might not be the most exciting job ever (I sometimes spend hours manually formatting italic text, for example), but it gives me the opportunity to work with books, my first love. I have learned so much about typography and about how books are made in the past few years, and it has also deepened my appreciation of book design.

Penguin Classics recently began releasing a new series called Drop Caps, made up of collectible editions of classic texts with covers designed by Jessica Hische and Penguin Art Director Paul Buckle. There are six in the series thus far: A for Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, B for Brontë’s Jane Eyre, C for Cather’s My Ántonia, D for Dickens’ Great Expectations, E for Eliot’s Middlemarch, and F for Flaubert’s Madame Bovary (translated by Lydia Davis—this is a great translation, by the way). I don’t run giveaways very often but this is one that I was excited to do, since it will mean that someone will get two classic novels, to read or, if the book is already beloved, enjoy adding to his or her collection.

Penguin sent me a copy of the Drop Caps Jane Eyre, which is one of my favourite books. It would seem that I can’t own enough editions of this book! This one is really quite lovely and I’m looking forward to seeing the full, colourful alphabet. All 26 spines next to each other are going to make a beautiful spectrum of beautiful literature.

For a chance to win two books from the Drop Caps series, please leave a comment below telling me which two books you would choose, and please be sure to include a means by which I can contact you if you win (an email address, a link to a blog, etc). This giveaway is open internationally. Comments are moderated to prevent spam; your comment might not appear right away but it will be registered. I will close comments on Friday, December 21.

Good luck!

(I was not compensated financially for this giveaway but I was given the copy of Jane Eyre.)

  8. such a lovely giveaway! there is something so romantic about working so closely with books, like you do. sometimes i think about diverting from my current path (even though i don't really know what that is) and studying library sciences once i complete my PhD as a way to combine my background in art history with my love of books. there is a secret magic hidden in the materiality of books.

i think i would choose B (Jane Eyre) and F (Madame Bovary), two of my favourite classics. i love collectible editions and this new series is especially gorgeous. thank you so much!

  11. This giveaway is FANTASTIC! Over the years, my loved ones have helped me build a collection of Pride & Prejudice editions ranging from early editions in leather to copies from the 70s with blue edges. A is for Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice is a natural choice. Also, B if for Charlotte Bronte is my second choice as it's my favorite book of all time. I've read it cover to cover once every year since I was 16. That's a lot of years. Thanks for such a literary treat, Anabela!

  12. gahhh Jessica Hische + Penguin Classics, sign me up. I would love the first two books: Austen is a hero of mine (I began reading her around age 12, she was a large part of my 'coming of age times'), and Brontë's Jane Eyre I actually just re-read this year (and loved it again) but it would be lovely to have this special version on my shelves. Drop Cap dreams la la la. Crossing fingers, lady, cheers!

I love books so much and there can't be a greater giveaway than these books. Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice are among the books a girl should have in her library. It would be a pleasure for me to keep them close to me.

  140. I would LOVE to win this! I'm such a huge fan of classic novels (I collect pre-loved copies), Jessica Hische (I'm a graphic designer and am crazy about her work, she's a huge inspiration) and good old printed books in general!
I'd love to have Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre, both of which I already have pre-loved copies of, or Madame Bovary and Great Expectations, neither of which I've had the pleasure of reading or acquiring yet.
    Eeee! *fingers crossed!*
