harbingers

1.
I made a playlist for West Elm that you can listen to here if you have Spotify. I know the end of summer is coming when that Talk Talk track comes back on repeat. It’s subconscious.

2.
The other day I put Waiting for the Sun by The Doors on and when “Summer’s Almost Gone” came on I flipped my car stereo the bird. End of summer denial is actually a harbinger.

2.
The Canadian National Exhibition (the Ex/the CNE). Every year when I was little our teachers would distribute a free pass coupon to the CNE on the last day of school. The end of summer always seemed so far away, and the Ex was always its harbinger, since it would open in the last few weeks before Labour Day. My father’s impatience with crowds usually kept us away despite the free passes, although one year we did go and he won a small koala for me (midway prizes were so much more modest then!). Another year we went and a family friend bought a whistle he put in his mouth that imitated the most beautiful birdsong.

Some years I don’t go, and there were a few years where I let my snobbery get in the way of my enjoyment. But Geoff & I went last year, at night, and it was so much fun. This year we went during the day to get a different feel for it. The rides have been the same for forever, with their charming signage and handpainted details, which is almost comforting. We went on a couple, and checked out the hilarious houseplant competition. As usual, my photos make it seem as though there weren’t that many people around! I do have a knack for that.

And no, we didn’t eat a so-called “cronut burger.”

Hi, Geoff! At the top of the wheel.

  1. Lovely photo diary!
I've always wanted to try a cronut.. But UK hasn't caught on with the trend yet. But now I hope they don't after reading that article!

  4. Such a great vibe to these shots. What film do you normally use? I'm stuck on Kodak UltraMax 400, but looking to try something different. Enjoy these magical last days of summer.

    1. I've been mostly using Portra, 160 or 400 depending on indoor/outdoor. I really love it. Thank you.

  5. for all you canadians who don't have spotify, you can get the playlist into rdio with this cool web tool: http://resp.in/ (not spam, just a tool i love and use a lot!)

  6. it's been so long since i've been to a fair and this makes me miss it. my favorite time of the fair is when the sun is just setting and the fair is just getting less crowded as people leave to go home. it becomes so nice at that time and you really get to enjoy the setting :)

    1. Oh yes, that's just when we were there and it was lovely. I do love all the lights at night as well, it's such a different feel.

  7. this is making me nostalgic for the ex (even though i get sick on all the rides, i love the slides. yes i'm 5.)...which no longer stops in ottawa, i'm told? wtf. way to ruin a whole bunch of kids' futures, exhibition!

ANYWAY. that first shot is so, SO lovely...please tell me you will be making a print of it sometime? i would love to hang it on my wall, though maybe we could do a swap of some kind, since i'm mega broke these days. sigh.

also! i tried to download the west elm mix, but i keep getting redirected to spotify, which doesn't let canada get in on the action, as i'm sure you already know. any suggestions on how to download the (awesome-looking, sure-to-be-amazing-sounding) mix without pretending i'm from the uk/us?

annnnd finally: glad you're blogging a bit more lately (though clearly your absence was because the summer was so darn awesome. right? right)! ;)

    1. If you want a print of it just let me know and we can work something out. About Spotify: a commenter above mentioned this tool: http://resp.in/ I think it converts it into a Rdio playlist, which is available here! Glad you want to check it out.

Thanks. It's become pretty difficult for me lately and there's been a whole lot of wondering what the point of all of it is and if I should even bother to continue!

  9. Absolutely wonderful photos! That first one with the carousel and flowers is my favourite of them all, but they are all truly beautiful. :) When The Ex came to Winnipeg when I was a kid the biggest thrill was always going on the Polar Express - Loved that ride! Also, I am now craving mini donuts and lemonade. :P

  13. these are so fun. your photos do make it seem more serene than i'm sure it was. where i live we have an event like this in April called "Fiesta". i avoid it because of the crowds, but i'm always intrigued by the carnival rides. i love the way you've captured them here.
